Project "CSJ" update
Well, it's been a busy few weeks on the project! When J and I have found the time, we've disassembled the bike from the outside in - thank goodness I watched every single episode of American Chopper!
The bike has been stripped down to just the frame and wheels, and the wheels will be off by the weekend. You can just see the engine on the wooden blocks behind the bike - it came out without a hitch! The sludge was blown out of the cooling system, and thankfully we kept our two test runs short, as no coolant was circulating in the jackets around the #1 and #2 cylinders due to a blockage in the coolant line! The bike fired up both times with no effort, and ran very smoothly, so we are hoping that no work other than some new gaskets is needed.
The motor and carburetors will be off to our local Yamaha dealer for new gaskets (engine) and a tear-down and rebuild (carbs). Next up after that? Take both frames that we have to the powder coater and see which one he picks, and take the wheels for a (hopefully close to stock colour!) powder coating. Both sets of forks will go to the suspension expert to see which one set is in better shape. Once all the components are up to snuff, the slow process of cleaning and reassembling can begin!
