A Day Which Will Live in Infamy, Part One

December 7, 1941... a day which will live in infamy. Today marks the 68th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and the official entry of the United States into World War II. While in Hawaii in October, we made a trip to Pearl Harbour, the Arizona Memorial and the Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island. It is a day well-spent, as you truly feel as if you are standing in the middle of history while visiting there. Plan for a whole day, as it takes a whole day to visit everything at Pearl Harbour - the Arizona, the Pacific Aviation Museum, the Submarine Museum and USS Bowfin, and the Battleship Missouri.
Not one of our photos, but an excellent aerial view of the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbour. The water was a lot higher when we were there, and only the turret ring to the left of the Memorial was visible.
The mooring point that the Battleship USS Arizona was tied to when it exploded and sank after taking a Japanese bomb in its forward magazine.
Approaching the Arizona Memorial on the shuttle boat... the silence is eerie, and the visitors are very respectful.
One bomb into the forward magazine... 1,177 names on the wall in the Memorial.
Leaving the Arizona Memorial to go back to shore is as profound an experience as your arrival.
