Oregon Trail - Day 2

That's the end of Washington in the upper right, and the Astoria-Megler bridge that joins Washington State to Oregon at the town of Astoria, which sits at the mouth of the mighty Columbia River. Despite the appeal of a 4-mile long bridge, we simply admired it and proceeded to turn left and head south down the Oregon Coast.

The gorgeous beach at Seaside, Oregon... our first stop of the day. The clouds were high and the sun peeked through several times, but it just didn't have enough jam to burn them off. Regardless, it is a beautiful beach and well worth a stop on your travels through the area.

Haystack Rock just south of Cannon Beach. This was the first of the huge residual chunks of rock that used to be Oregon's coastline that we saw, and which dot the coastline all the way down.
Inside the Tillamook Cheese Factory... that's a lot of cheese! The big bricks (we guessed they weigh about 40 lbs) are fed through slicers that turn them into smaller blocks... endless cheese, Gromit! The best part of the visit - the sample section! My personal favourite was the sharp white cheddar... worth 3 trips through the line!

We ended the day in Tillamook with a wonderful dinner at La Mexicana restaurant... huge portions, reasonable price, nice ambience... if you are ever in Tillamook, give it a try! After dinner, needing to work off some of my prawn fajitas, we drove out to Oceanside and walked on the beach as the sun set behind the Three Arches. To the right of the rocks in the photo, the bluff rises about 200' above the beach. You can walk through an old lava tube right underneath the cliff, and come out on the other side where you are greeted with a view of about a dozen of these huge sentinels in the sea!
