Oregon Trail - Day 4

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW! Better than any amusement park ride you've ever been on! 60 mph across giant sand dunes in a "sand rail", getting sandblasted while your driver makes you think he's totally lost control before just barely missing the obstacles that are right in front of you then flashing past the sides of the rail... exhilirating doesn't even begin to describe it! It was definitely NOT C's cup of tea, but K enjoyed it, and J and I will be back for the hourlong ride next time!

We came out of the trees here, and drove hellbent for leather all the way to the other side of those two stands of trees you can see on the far horizon, then came screaming back... nearly 40 minutes of adrenalin-pumping, open exhaust roaring excitement... it sounds like you are inside a jet engine when you are at full throttle!

The beautiful bridge in Florence, OR, which sits at the north end of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. There are several of these bridges along Hwy 101, all designed and built by the same architect.

An aerial shot of Florence, OR... I took it from the P38 while Jamie and I were flying it around... ok, Susan, I'm joking! The Pacific Ocean is at the top, and the Siuslaw (Sye-oo-slaw) River is int the foreground. We actually spent a wonderful hour on a little beach right near where the river flows into the ocean.

The absolutely gorgeous Umpqua River... it rivals any river we brag about in BC. We left the Dunes, but not the sand, behind in Florence, drove south to Reedsport and turned inland, following the Umpqua east and south ending up in Roseburg, OR. Along the way, we saw a herd of about 100 elk grazing alongside the highway. The other big change - temperature! We left the coast at about 70F (to be generous!) and by the time we were 10 miles inland, the temperature had rocketed up into the 90's! The forecast for the next 5 days? Mid-90's, baby!
