Why is everyone going down to the beach?

As the sun set on August 14, 2015, we noticed that everyone seemed to be heading to the beach.  When we got there, we heard that there had been 2 lightning strikes to the south of us near Oliver, both starting forest fires.  In the photo above, you can see the north Wilson Lake fire starting to glow behind the trees on the right just after dusk (the two lights on the left belong to a house).  By 9 o'clock, the entire hillside was ablaze, as you can see below.  The line of fire on the ridge behind the big tree on the left was called the Testalinden fire, and it is still burning several weeks later.  The fire burned the entire time we were there, but the wind favoured us and blew to the south the whole time.
