A Flood of Biblical Proportions... well, maybe minus the Ark!

The photo above was taken on April 2, 2007... you know, nearly two weeks into Spring...

So, while speaking to a workmate today about the possible flooding issues the Fraser Valley may face in coming weeks, I was shocked to hear him say "We've got 3 weeks of supplies put away".

Needless to say, I immediately did an inventory of what we had in our house, and calculated that by Day 4 of the Great Flood of '07, I will be trying to decide whether red or white is more appropriate with Jewel (our cat)!

** Ed. note: "I'M JOKING"!!! **

Seriously, my workmate is in charge of my company's Disaster Response Plan, and there are some dire predictions as to the possible damage that will be done should any of the several dikes and levees in the Fraser Valley and surrounding areas fail.

At present, experts are predicting that at some point in the near future, the Fraser River will crest at 3-4' ABOVE flood level... that is, above the level that the dikes have been built to withstand. So, starting this week, an emergency plan has been put into place to raise the dikes along the Fraser River by 1m in critical areas. Here's hoping they can shovel and fill faster than old Mother Nature can melt!

We are going to plan a little more seriously for the possibility of Doomsday, since we have read "The Ant and the Grasshopper" and we all know how that one ends!

Meanwhile, the house motors along. The finishing carpenter has been hard at work putting up crown molding, putting in windowsills and baseboard moldings, and building wonderful wraparound shelves in the kids' rooms. These shelves will be home to all manner of Lego, Bionicles, Barbies, Polly Pockets, and whatever else a child's imagination can think of that needs displaying.

"Tile Guy" was at the house today, and within a couple of days, the tile will be done. The painters are supposed to arrive this week as well, and I think a good solid coat of paint will really show what the finished product will look like.

The packing is going extremely well, with only the kitchen left to pack. I don't think I've ever seen so many cardboard boxes in my house!

O00oohhhh, it's all so exciting!

Yours in moving,

John
