The View from the Top

The view of the Heavens from the Golden Gallery near the top of St. Paul's Cathedral. On our last day in London, we decided to brave the 600 stairs to the uppermost outside viewing gallery high on the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral. So, 600 stairs up and 600 stairs down. Then double that when you decide to go back up again later in the day because it looks sunnier out than when you were first up and you think the pictures might look better with blue sky! Oh, my thigh muscles! A time 9:04 with some traffic on the way up the 2nd time... let me know how you do when you go!

The view to the west shows the Thames River, several of the bridges, the London Eye and the top of Big Ben, among many of the famous sites near downtown London.

This little hole in the floor is just before you walk out onto the Golden Gallery... that circle you can see way, way, way down there is the main floor of the Cathedral, several hundred feet below you. If you click on the photo and enlarge it, look at all the little dots surrounding the circle... those are chairs to sit in while you take in a service... they look like ants from up here!

The view south across the Thames, showing the Millenium Bridge and the old power station that has been converted into the Tate Modern Gallery... which is apparently where you can see some really weird modern art... none of the tour guides we met were very high on it. You can also see several of the river boats that ply the Thames all day, shuttling sightseers east and west to points of interest on the Thames.
The front entrance to St. Paul's... simply too big to get it all into the photograph! The main doors alone are about 30' high and 12' wide each, and made of solid wood. It was neat to stand inside the church in the very same spot where Charles and Di were married in 1981, and where British monarch's have married for hundreds of years!
