Heads in the clouds

Some might call it impatience.  Some might call it over-eagerness.  Some might call it just plain crazy!  Whatever you call it, I decided it would be a good time to ride up to the top of Mt Baker, since the road officially opened on July 1, 2014.  With the words of several meteorologists ringing in my ears  ("... some showers this morning, clearing after noon, sunny skies this afternoon..."), I enticed our intrepid group to ride to the top of the mountain.   We managed to dance between the raindrops on the way up, and only rode up into the clouds with about 200 meters to go to the top... in other words, we had a great view of the  bottom of the mountain, and absolutely no view of the top!  The snow was still at pretty impressive levels in the upper lot, high enough to still cover the bathrooms!   We made it back to Maple Falls before the rain really became pesky, and only rode out of the rain as we got back to Sumas.  In for a penny, in for a pound... we stopped for lunch at Bob's in Sumas, and sure enough, when we came out to head home, the sun was making its entrance for the day.  By the time we got home, the sun was going full throttle, and we took advantage of it to dry out our damp gear.  Rain notwithstanding, it was still a great run there and back on near-empty roads!

My lovely wife, showcasing what was probably the largest patch of blue sky we saw all day, just above the lodge in the background... the largest patch, that is, until we got home!
